The Untold Truths of Postpartum: What Every Mom Should Know

Growing a child is an incredible experience. The joy and excitement that surround a growing belly, the "pregnancy glow," and the anticipation of bringing a new life into the world are truly special. Everyone is quick to offer advice on baby names, parenting techniques, and feeding options. But what about the real information that moms need to hear?

As much as I adore my mother, aunts, and all the women in my family, none of them— not even my sweet, soft-spoken grandma—told me about the day I would pee my pants. Yes, you heard that right. Whether it’s from laughing too hard during a night out, jumping on a trampoline, or sneezing during allergy season, these little "accidents" can happen during pregnancy and after the baby arrives.

You might think, "But Amanda, you’re a pelvic floor physical therapist; you should have known this was coming!" And while that’s true, having the background knowledge doesn’t quite compare to experiencing it firsthand. A little heads-up from friends and family before delivery would have been nice! In fact, I think baby showers should include a handout on all the things that really happen to your body after childbirth.

As women, we need to stick together and share the realities of postpartum life, like the possibility of incontinence. If you’re experiencing leaks at six weeks postpartum, there’s a high chance it could continue at 12 weeks or even five years down the line. So, if you’re chatting with a friend or family member who’s recently had a baby, don’t hesitate to say, "Hey, you might want to speak with a pelvic floor physical therapist."

I certainly don’t hold back anymore. My mission is to educate women about the changes their bodies may go through and to make sure they know that while these issues are common, they are NOT normal and should be addressed.

This week, I encourage you to talk to someone you know about pelvic health. (But maybe skip being the random person in the grocery store giving incontinence advice—leave that to me, haha.) By sharing a little bit of knowledge, you could help improve someone’s health and well-being.
