Top Tips for Preparing and Recovering After a C-Section

For many expectant mothers, a C-section might not be part of the original birth plan, leaving them unprepared for both the procedure and the recovery process. While your healthcare provider will guide you on essential aspects like safe movement and feeding options, there are personal insights that can make your journey smoother. Having experienced three C-sections myself, here are the top things I wish I had known:

Accept Help

A C-section is major surgery, and the recovery process requires support. For the first two weeks, avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby. Don’t hesitate to lean on your partner, friends, or family to assist with daily tasks like baby care, meal preparation (thank goodness for DoorDash!), grocery shopping (delivery is a lifesaver), and household chores (yes, even cleaning toilets!). Accepting help will reduce physical and mental stress, allowing your body to heal more effectively.

Prioritize Preparation

Just as you prepare for a hospital stay or a marathon, it's crucial to prepare for your C-section recovery. Here’s a list of must-haves that I’ve put together for my sister, who is currently 37 weeks pregnant:

  • Peri Bottle: Even though you had a C-section, you’ll still experience vaginal bleeding. A peri bottle is essential for gentle cleaning after using the restroom.

  • Pads: Stock up on pads for postpartum bleeding.

  • Silicone Scar Pads: These can be applied to your scar once it has fully healed. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before using them.

  • Ice Packs and Pain Medication: These are key for reducing swelling and managing pain at your incision site.

Take Control of Your C-Section Experience

  • Opt for a Clear Drape: If you want to see your baby being lifted, request a clear drape. This also allows you to engage with the medical staff during the procedure.

  • Hold Your Baby First: Ask to be the first to hold your baby, or have your partner do skin-to-skin contact while you’re being stitched up.

Prioritize Pain Management

It’s important to take your prescribed pain medication as directed. With my first C-section, I tried to stop taking my meds too soon because I was worried about dependency, but this led to unnecessary pain and swelling. Inadequate pain management can prolong your recovery, increase the risk of chronic pain, and even contribute to postpartum depression. Work with your provider to develop a pain management plan that supports your healing.

Stay Active, But Take It Slow

Once you’re able to move safely, start incorporating small movements into your routine:

  • Get Your Own Ice: Walking short distances, like getting your own ice in the hospital, can aid in your recovery.

  • Master Proper Movement: After a C-section, even simple movements can be painful. Here are some tips:

    • Getting Out of Bed: Log roll to your side, blow out as you use your arms to push yourself up, and avoid straining your abdominal muscles.

    • Standing Up: Scoot forward, lean slightly forward (tits over toes), and blow out as you stand.

    • Feeding Your Baby: Use a football hold and pillows to keep pressure off your incision.
