Understanding and Addressing Urinary Leakage During Physical Activities

It's a frequent topic of conversation in both the clinic and at my children's sports events: "I experience urinary leakage when I do _____________."

At first glance, it might seem like this is a normal reaction to certain activities, but it's important to clarify—it's not normal, though it is common.

Understanding the Difference: Common vs. Normal

Experiencing urinary leakage during activities such as:

  • Running or jogging

  • Jumping or hopping

  • Carrying heavy objects

  • Lifting weights

  • Coughing or sneezing

is indeed common, but that doesn't mean it should be accepted as a normal part of life. Often, these issues arise because many of us are not performing these activities with proper form.

For example, during a recent session at Burn Boot Camp, I felt an urge to urinate while jumping. I realized my form was off; instead of keeping my body aligned with my ribs stacked over my pelvis, my posture had shifted, causing undue pressure on my pelvic floor. Correcting my form immediately resolved the urgency, allowing me to continue jumping without leakage.

Tips for Improving Your Form

When exercising, consider the following to help prevent leakage:

  1. Check Your Alignment: Ensure your ribs are stacked directly over your pelvis. This alignment supports your pelvic floor and bladder.

  2. Adjust as Needed: If you feel the urge to urinate, reevaluate and adjust your form to alleviate the pressure on your bladder.

I’m here to provide quick fixes and strategies to improve your pelvic health. For those seeking more in-depth guidance, I have a Bladder Leakage Course. This course covers techniques to support your pelvic floor and manage leakage, even on days when you're not engaging in challenging activities.
